The Ascension of Christ - Its Meaning for the Spiritual Life
Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.
The secret to sanctity is strong motivation. We must be deeply convinced that
following Christ is worth the effort. And we must be powerfully inspired to
rise above mediocrity to serve Our Lord generously all through life.
Among the strongest motives we have for growing
in sanctity is the historical fact of Christs Ascension into heaven.
- Knowing that Christ suffered and died out of love for us, we
also know He rose bodily from the grave and ascended bodily into heaven. We
trust that, even as we have suffered and died with Him we, too, shall rise bodily
from the grave and, like Him, be taken bodily into heaven.
- Although we know He is now in heaven, at the right hand of His
heavenly Father, we believe He is also (and still) with us bodily on earth in
the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. Our faith in His Eucharistic Presence is
the price we have to pay in order to attain to His visible Presence in heaven
in eternity.
